MARY SLESSOR-AKAN GLO FOUNDATION EMPOWERS SKILLED A'IBOM WOMEN WITH SEWING MACHINES, HAIR DRYERS, ACCESSORIES ...as Dr. Edet charges beneficiaries on commitment to their businesses




In furtherance of its commitment to immortalize the legacies of the late legendary Scottish Presbyterian Missionary to Nigeria, Mary Mitchell Slessor, by providing for and empowering the needy, the Mary Slessor-Akan Glo Foundation - MASLAG, has empowered selected women across Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District with several gift items including sewing machines/kits, hair dryers/kits, hair washing tray among others to boost entrepreneurship. 

Speaking at a colourful event which was held at the old council hall, Ikot Ekpene LGA on Thursday, May 30, 2024, the progenitor and Founder of the Foundation, Dr. Glory Edet, while giving a brief history of Mary Slessor and her selfless sacrifices to humanity, noted that the foundation was borne out of her passion to immortalize the legacies of Mary Slessor and give back to the society. 

"This empowerment programme is organized to encourage women entrepreneurs, sharpen their skills and boost their level of productivity. This foundation will continue to empower and put smiles on the faces of people by the special grace of God" She said. 

Dr. Edet charged the beneficiaries to be passionate about their skills and make good use of the empowerment items given to them and also informed them that the monitoring and evaluation team of the Foundation will be visiting them unannounced to see how they make good use of  the given items.

Dr. Glory Edet used the event to encourage the women to thank God for a successful tenure of Governor Umo Eno’s one year in office and also encourage the women to support the Governor, the wife and his administration. 

The Coordinator of MASLAG, Mrs. Jane Michael Essien, while listing the numerous achievements of the foundation since its inception, charged the beneficiaries to make good use of the empowerment items given to them and informed them that the foundation will keep an eye on them to inspect their level of progress. 

Also speaking, the President, Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District Women’s Forum, Hon. Inibehe Silas lauded the impact of Dr. Glory Edet through her foundation, and for the numerous lives she has touched. 

"Dr. Glory Edet is a household name in Akwa Ibom State. Few years ago, as a Commissioner, she empowered Akwa Ibom Women with sewing machines, hair dryers and other items, and today, she is empowering the women of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District with sewing machines and hair dressing equipments; this goes a long way to show that she is a compassionate woman who is living her dreams". She added. 

A beneficiary of the empowerment programme who spoke on behalf of other beneficiaries, Ms. Idara, thanked the founder of MASLAG for providing them with quality equipments to improve their level of productivity. She assured that the items given will be used judiciously. 

In his welcome remarks, the Transition Committee Chairman of Ikot Ekpene LGA represented by his Vice thanked the women of Ikot Ekpene for their roles in development. He appreciated the immediate past Dean of Commissioners in Akwa Ibom State and the Founder of Mary Slessor- Akan Glo Foundation for always assisting the less privileged. 

Other stakeholders who spoke and thanked the Founder of MASLAG as well as advice the beneficiaries to make good use of the items were; the Hon. Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development,  Dr. Offiong Offor, Lady Blessing Ebong Uko, wife of the Dean of Commissioners and Special Advisers in Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Eshiet, Wife of the TC Chairman, Etim Ekpo, Obonganwan Abigail Akpan, President, Eket  Senatorial District Women's Forum, Mrs. Idara Ephraim, Mrs. Idorenyin Effiong, the representative of the President, Uyo Senatorial District Women’s Forum, Obonganwan Lucy and others.
