DEDICATION OF MARY MITCHEL SLESSOR CHAPEL

Updated: Aug 8, 2023

Dr. Glory Edet, a former agricultural commissioner and dean of commissioners/special advisers for Akwa Ibom State, has given the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria a structure she has named "Mary Mitchel Slessor Chapel."

The Hall was given. Mary Mitchell Slessor, a Scottish Presbyterian missionary to Nigeria who was born on December 2, 1848, died on January 15, 1915, and was buried there, is remembered for her life and times.

In handing over the keys to Dr. Ekpenyong Akpanika, Moderator of the General Assembly and Prelate of The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Dr. Edet stated that the chapel was built in fulfillment of her vow to erect a suitable structure in honor and remembrance of the legendary mother.

"Mary Slessor lived in many places, including my village, Ikpe Ikot Nkon, and according to history, my grandfather, late Chief Akankpo Isonguyo, lived with her," she says.

"I know my grandfather learned a lot from Mary Slessor, and as a granddaughter, I have taken it upon myself that Mary Slessor's name and legacies will be forever green in Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria, and beyond," she added.

The Prelate, His Eminence, Ekpenyong Akpanika, offered a homily on the theme, "What Legacy Will You Be Remembered For?" taken from Prov.13:22-25, and encouraged the audience to try to leave a tangible legacy for which they will be remembered.

The clergy, who remarked that what immortalizes a man is not what he does for himself but for others, praised the former Commissioner for what he called "a state-of-the-art facility" and prayed for God's blessings on her.

According to our correspondent, the ceremony was also attended by previous commissioners, Chairmen of Ibiono Ibom and Itu Local Councils, National and State Lawmakers, Permanent Secretaries, the donor's parents, PDP faithfuls, and University of Uyo employees.

It should be remembered that the late Mary Slessor was essential in putting a stop to the renowned and unpopular practice of murdering twins when they are born in portions of West Africa.
